DESCRIPTION
MIRABUS invites you to discover the Port of Callao. Travel through its historic streets and learn about its anecdotes and traditions. Our service also will permit you to enter the Fortress of Real Felipe and the Naval Museum. Finally, you will have the chance to board the Abtao Submarine.
Callao is the main port of Peru, and one of the most important in South America. It is the entrance gateway to Lima. This port has enormous transcendence to Peru because of the intense commercial activity conducted there with five continents.
Besides, Callao has been stage to numerous facts in our history. The fortress of Real Felipe is located here; a stunning military building constructed in the colonial period in order to protect Lima, the ambitioned capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru, from the threats of pirates and corsairs.
The Real Felipe was also the last stronghold of resistance of the Spanish military forces in Peru. Years later the Callao port was stage to the combat of "Dos de Mayo" (May second). This combat stopped the Spanish Crown from taking over Peru one more time.
Within the Naval Museum we will be able to appreciate different navigation instruments, as well as various relics from diverse ships belonging to our naval forces. We will also find personal objects of our most important naval hero, admiral Miguel Grau, also known as "el Caballero de los Mares" (the Gentleman of the Seas).
Afterwards, we will visit the Abtao Submarine where you will enjoy the excitement and adrenaline of boarding a real submarine, one of the most enigmatic embarkations man has created. We will enter the command room, the machinery room, the cabins, etc.
